대학교육의 질적 선택과 수익률: 대학원 이수 및 복수전공의 효과 추정

교육투자 수익률에 대한 연구는 그동안 주로 고졸-대졸 또는 전문대졸-4년대졸 자료를 비교하는 형태로 이루어졌으나 학생 차원에서의 대학교육 질적 선택과 수익률에 대한 연구는 없었다. 본 연구는 1982년, 1992년, 2002년 4년제 대졸자의 교육정보와 직업력 자료를 이용하여 학생의 질적 선택에 따른 노동시장에서의 중장기 수익률에 대해 분석하였다. 질적 선택 변수로는 대학원 이수 여부, 복수(이중)전공․부전공 이수 여부를 중심으로 하였다. 분석결과 대학원 이수의 중장기 수익률은 10∼13% 수준이었고, 최근 코호트에서 보다 높게 나타났으며 1982년 졸업생이 가장 낮은 수준이었다. 박사의 수익률은 석사보다 2∼2.5배가량 컸으며, 개인 능력을 통제하는 경우엔 수익률이 2%p 가량 낮아졌다. 그리고 노동시장에서의 시간이 경과하면서 대학원 수익률은 축소되었다. 또 복수․부전공 이수와 고학점 취득의 수익률도 전반적으로 유의한 것으로 나타났으나 최근 졸업생에서는 임금 향상에 큰 영향을 주지 못하였다.
Abstract
Although there have been studies on the rate of return to quantitative educational investment and on the effect of college’s qualitative investment, there remains no precedent research on the relationship between students’ qualitative choice and rate of return. Using the four-year college graduates’ educational information and job history data from the class of 1982, 1992 and 2002, this study analyses the rate of return of students’ qualitative selection. The result suggests that the long-term rate of return of graduate school diploma were at the level of 10~13%, showing a higher level compared with the latest cohort. The rate of return of doctorate degree were higher than master’s degree by 2~2.5 times, and the rate of return decreased by about 2%p when individual ability was controlled. The rate of return of graduate school diploma was reduced as time went by in the labor market. In addition, the rate of return of double major and high grades showed significantly positive effect overall but did not have a significant influence on the wages of the 2002 graduates.
