2010년 대졸자 직업이동 경로조사에 의하면, 우리나라 4년제 대학생 중 약 58%가 재학 중 근로경험이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 2000년대 들어 교육비 부담이 확대되면서 재학 중 근로가 대학교육을 지속하기 위한 하나의 방편으로 인식되었을 가능성을 내포하고 있다. 그렇다면 재학 중 근로는 과연 교육성과에 어떤 영향을 미쳤을까? 본 연구에서는 4년제 대학생의 재학 중 근로가 GPA 및 졸업 소요기간에 미친 영향을 분석하였다. 먼저, 추정방법상 주목할 점은 재학 중 근로에 대한 내생성을 고려하기 위하여 임금 및 가계의 예산 제약 정보를 도구변수로 이용하여 2단계 최소추정법을 적용하였다는 점이다. 또한, 재학 중 근로를 근로기간 및 강도에 따라 구분하여 추정하였다는 점이다. 분석 결과에 의하면, 4년제 대학생의 재학 중 근로는 GPA를 하락시키고 대학 졸업 소요기간을 연장시키는 등 교육성과에 다소 부정적인 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 특히, 이러한 결과는 단기간 근로경험에 해당하는 첫 일자리에서의 주당 근로시간보다 장기간 누적된 근로경험을 대변하는 재학 중 총 근로개월 수를 이용하여 추정할 때 더 뚜렷해지는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 교육비 조달에 따른 가계 또는 개인의 부담이 과도한 근로를 유발하지 않도록 정책적 노력이 필요함을 시사한다.
Abstract
This article examined the effect of working while in college on GPA and the length of time to graduate college by using Graduates Occupational Mobility Survey (GOMS 2009). There are two contributions of this study in terms of empirical aspects. The first thing is that the endogeneity of working while in college is considered by using information on wage and financial status of household. In turn, two stage least squares (2SLS or Instrumental variable approach) is applied. The other thing is that the strength of working and the working period is taken into account by using different measurement on working. The results show that working while in college has detrimental effect on GPA and has extended the time to finish college. Especially, this effect is stand out when the accumulated measurement like total amount of time to work while in college was used.
