외모차별이 청년층의 노동시장 이행에 미치는 영향

청년층의 학교에서 노동시장으로 이행과정에서 외모차별 경험이 미치는 영향을 살펴보기 위하여 한국직업능력개발원의 한국교육고용패널(KEEP) 자료를 분석하였다. 개인적인 외모차별 경험은 신장이나 체중과 같은 신체적인 외양뿐만 아니라 자신감과 같은 심리적인 요소가 반영된 것으로 추정되었다. 취업을 준비하는 과정에서 외모차별 경험자는 사설취업알선기관의 상담과 같은 개별적인 활동에 상대적으로 더 많이 참여하고 있다. 외모차별 경험자는 취업실패 경험이 상대적으로 많으나, 정규직 취업과 취업 이후 임금에서는 차이가 없는 것으로 분석되었다. 이는 외모차별이 입직단계에 집중되고 있음을 보여 주는 것으로 개인적인 직무중심의 서구에 비하여, 내부자와 외부자를 구별하는 노동시장 특성을 보유한 우리나라에서는 직장에서 외모차별에 의한 불이익이 상대적으로 낮을 가능성이 높다.
Abstract
Using Korean Education and Employment Panel(KEEP) surveys, we investigate influence of appearance discrimination on school-to-work transition. We find that the experience of physical appearance discrimination is related to physical appearance, such as height and weigh as well as psychological factors such as self-confidence. Those who have the discrimination experience participate in employment preparation of job counseling such as private employment agencies and have relatively failed to be employed. We find also there is no difference of getting a regular job and the wages by experience of physical appearance discrimination. This suggests that we have relatively lower penalty of the appearance discrimination in the workplace than the Western society.
