남명 조식의 신명사도⋅명과 심법

경의의 학문을 한 남명 조식이 마음을 다스린 방법(심법)은 「신명사도」와 「신명사명」에 집약되어 있다. 이 도·명에 관해서는 이미 여러 편의 논문이 나와서 자의와 구성, 정신의 대략을 밝혔다. 다만 그의 심법 전체를 체계적으로 설명하면서, 좀더 세밀하게 해명할 부분이 있다고 판단되어 본고를 작성한다. 먼저 그의 자기 수신은 물론 교육활동에 오랜 기간 동안 지혜와 덕성을 기르는 含畜의 정신이 관통하고 있음을 밝혔다. 다음으로 存養, 省察, 克己로 구성된 「신명사명」의 중요 내용은 일상의 말과 행위를 정성스럽게 하자는 유학 본래의 存誠 내지 集義였음을 논의하였다. 정밀하게 분석하고 한결같은 마음으로 存誠하려고 의지함으로써, 그는 경의 공부를 실천했다. 이 점에서 그는 다른 정주학자들과 입장이 다르지 않았다. 대신 논자는 마음이 미세하게 움직일 때, 사욕과 사의가 일어나면 용감하게 그것을 극복하려 한 강력한 극기 정신에서 그의 특징을 찾아야 한다고 제안한다. 마지막으로 『참동계』의 영향이 강한 이 도·명에는 호흡법을 활용하여 극기의 힘을 기르고자 한 조식의 의도가 내포되었다고 추정해 보았다.
Abstract
There is no objection that Cho Sik studied Confucian meditation(敬) and Righteousness(義), and his method of mind cultivation(心法) was concentrated in 「Shinmyungsado」 and 「Shinmyeongsamyung」. Several papers have already been submitted about this picture and text. These writings revealed the meaning of the letters, the composition of the whole, and the outline of the spirit that penetrated. However, I wrote this article because I judged that there was a need to systematically explain his method of mind cultivation and that there was a part that needed to be investigated in more detail. First, I revealed that the spirit of Keeping and nurturing in mind, which cultivates wisdom and virtue for a long period of time, penetrates his study. Next, I discussed that the core of his method of mind cultivation was to be sincere in words and actions in daily life. Since he had the will to be precise and consistent in his words and actions, he practiced Concentrating mind(敬) and Righteousness(義). This aspect is not different from that of other scholars. Instead, I tried to find the characteristics of his method in that he bravely overcomes the negative elements of the mind when the mind moves minutely. Lastly, considering the strong influence of Chamdonggye in these writings and paintings, I assumed that Cho Sik wanted to develop the power of self-overcoming by using the breathing method.
