Abstract
Since the late Goryeo Dynasty, Sangju in Gyeongsangbuk-do has been a region for Confucianism where many scholars have visited or made their home. It is an area not to be overlooked in the history of Confucianism and Chinese literature. Especially ever since Hwang Chi-sin (黃致身), the first son of Bangchon Hwang Hui (1363-1452), and Soyungong (少尹公) Hwang Bo-sin (1401-1456) started living in Jungmo (中牟), Sangju, Hwang Hui's teachings and virtues became highly respected and had a great influence on scholars in the Sangju region. During the late Joseon Dynasty, Okdong Seowon expanded into an educational institution for the promotion of Taoism and the succession of academic lineage, centering on scholars of the Toegye School in the Sangju area with connections to priests, alumni, and relations by marriage. In particular, after Yu Seong-ryong (柳成龍) became a minister in Sangju during the mid-Joseon Dynasty in the 16th century, Jeong Gyeong-se (鄭經世), Lee Jun (李埈), Jeon Sik (全湜), etc. became active, leading to further development of the moral philosophy of Sangju. They started the literary tradition of Sangju which continued to Jeong Jong-ro's time, passing down various lectures, poetry meetings, and academic traditions. Okdong Seowon is an educational institution that played a central role in Sangju’s Confucianism. By looking at its enshrined scholars, academic background, and academic activities, it is evident that Okdong Seowon exists as a very valuable place in the history of Confucianism and literature. In particular, Jeong Gyeong-se and Jeong Jong-ro left many literary works that sing of their affection of the scenic spots in Sangju and their fondess of the local area. Against the background of Sangju's scenic sites and Okdong Seowon, this study focuses on literary works (詩文) to examine the literary tradition and its meaning which had been passed down to Jeong Gyeong-se and Jeong Jong-ro. The following areas were being investigated: I. The scenic sites (名勝) of Sangju and the moral state of leaving the secular life (脫俗) for tranquility (閑寂), II. Academic pursuit and enlightenment at Okdong Seowon, III. The meaning and value of the Jangsu Hwang clan (家門) and their family friends (世交). In their works, the scenic sites of Sangju cautioned scholars against being engrossed in trivial pursuits and offered them a place to escape from the secular world. Emphasis was placed on attaining moral perfection by immersing oneself in the scriptures of sages. Having been in close assosciation for six generations, Jeong Gyeong-se and Jeong Jong-ro families, as well as the Jangsu Hwang clan, contributed to the compilation of literature collections and the founding of seowons in Sangju, playing an important part in the history of thought and literature in the region. Through posthumous works (遺稿) related to Okdong Seowon and other literary materials by contemporary writers of that time, we hope that this study may build the foundation for new research on the academic lineage, traditions, and literary history of Confucianism in Sangju in future.
