Abstract
In this paper, we created 16 “tactile icons” for mobile devices with variations of amplitude, which was analogous to dynamics in music. For investigating these icon's usability, we conducted an identification experiment, measuring their information transfer(IT) with a mockup of mobile devices. The two possible locations of a mockup were participants' left hand and right thigh in this experiment. As the results, hit ratio of each tactile icon was calculated and similarities between tactile icons were investigated by building confusion matrices. The average information transfer(IT) was above 3 bits in both stimulus locations of left hand and right thigh. This result says that we can discriminate 8 to 9 tactile icons at human hand or at human thigh. We also derived a scenario which is applicable to current mobile devices in order to verify the usability of these tactile icons.
