Abstract
Even though it is very natural for the mobile interface to accommodate haptic technologies, it seems like to have a long way ahead for the haptic technologies to be fully applied to higher level applications. It can be said that research needs to focus on the meaning of human hands movement required on the small interface, and on the metaphor the movement can convey. This paper examined the issues to be considered in designing mobile haptic interfaces, particularly for haptic input and haptic feedback. Understanding of various haptic metaphors and their conceptual compatibility were investigated using a survey on young users. The result of the survey showed that some metaphors that are currently used on mobile devices did not establish good conceptual compatibility. This would suggest important and practical points in designing haptic mobile interfaces.
