Abstract
Objectives: This study explored how BomBom, a community-based organization in Seoul, developed resident-led practices to address household waste issues, elucidating how everyday concerns were transformed into collective action and how these practices contributed to local community assets. Methods: This study employed an instrumental case study design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and supplementary documents and were inductively analyzed to trace how resident-led waste-reduction practices emerged and evolved. Results: BomBom’s activities evolved from issue recognition to planning and implementation, following a cyclical pattern of learning, experimentation, and adjustment. Three recurring mechanisms—shared meaning-making, relationship-based action, and boundary negotiation with institutions—shaped key turning points, such as the reusable-container initiative and the cigarette-litter campaign. These activities strengthened several community asset domains, including human, social, cultural, built-environmental, and political. Meanwhile, natural and economic assets showed limited change. Conclusion: The case illustrates how small, resident-generated practices can evolve into broader community participation and partial institutional linkage. Thus, everyday relationship-based environmental action may be a valuable pathway toward healthier and more sustainable urban living.
