Background & Purpose : The compliance of the therapy for secondary prevention of the stroke is associated with reduction in stroke recurrence rate and better functional outcome. The aim of our study was to investigate the compliance of stroke patients for secondary prevention after discharge in newly developed city, Pyungchon. Methods : Study subjects included one hundred fourty-one stroke patients who were admitted to the Hallym Stroke Center in Pyungchon city between March 1 of 1999 and August 31 of 1999. Out of 141 stroke patients, those who either died during hospitalization or were discharged due to impending death were excluded. The telephone interview was conducted by 2 of the authors. The presence of residual neurologic deficit, the recurrence of stroke and current treatment they are receiving were assessed. Results : The mean age was 60.6 years and the male was 53.3%. There was no difference in basic characteristics between compliant and non- compliant groups except that the incidence of hypertension was more frequent in compliant group and the incidence of hemorrhagic stroke was more frequent in non-compliant group. Most of the non-compliant patients were currently under the care of traditional medicine (35.3%) and inadvertent over-the-counter drugs (23.5%). The reasons for noncompliance constitute the preference for traditional medicine (35.3%), ignorance of the importance of secondary prevention (29.4%), and followed by economic burden (20.6%). Conclusions : Similar to previous study in Seoul area, the perspectives of stroke in persons living in newly developed city also deviated from science-based knowledge and are heavily influenced by the presence of traditional medicine.
