Abstract
Purpose: In this study, we developed a transition support program for students and families (Track 1 student program; Track 2 family program), which consisted of the contents required for successful transition of students with developmental disabilities. Methods: Twenty pairs of developmental disabilities students and their families (one primary caregiver) who enrolled in a special class of high school in Gyeonggi-do participated in this study. Ten pairs were assigned to the experimental and control groups, respectively. To assess the effect of program participation on students and families, the pre-post test scores of the two groups were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test. Results: First, as a result of examining the effect of self-determination on student, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups. However, as measured by the family's perspective, the self-determination of the students increased statistically significantly after the program participation. Second, there was no statistically significant difference in the change of career decision self-efficacy between the two groups after the program. Third, the effect of the program on family empowerment was found to be statistically significant. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, we proposed a direction for the effective transition preparation process for high school students with developmental disabilities and their families.
