Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the major cause of mortality and morbidity in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The increasedrisk of CVD in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus involves multiple factors, including hypertension, smoking, albuminuria, and hypercholesterolemia. Of these, hypercholesterolemia is amenable to intervention. A large body of research rangingfrom molecular to population studies indicates that elevated low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is a major predictor ofCVD, including in the population with diabetes. Despite available therapies and increased attention to hypercholesterolemia, manypatients fail to achieve the LDL-C goals. A patient-tailored approach to dyslipidemia therapy, as determined by baseline LDL-Clevels, is an effective strategy for achieving target LDL-C levels.
