한국장로교단들의 웨스트민스터 신앙고백서와 대소요리문답의 수용

초록

오늘날 한국장로교회가 너무나 많은 교단들로 분열되어 있어 교단통합의 필요성이 너무나 절실하다. 그런데 그러한 교단통합은 교권주의 때문에도 어렵지만, 그와 함께 교리적인 차이점 때문에도 어렵다. 장로교단들이 교리적인 차이점들을 가지고 있지만, 그래도 장로교회의 가장 기본적인 신조인 웨스트민스터 신앙고백서와 대소요리문답을 공유하고 있다. 그러므로 한국장로교회가 공통적으로 채택하고 있는 웨스트민스터 표준문서들을 통해 상호간의 신학적인 공통점을 마련하면서 신학적인 간극을 줄여갈 수 있을 것이다. 웨스트민스터 신앙고백서는 1947년 2월에 영국 상원을 통과하였고 8월 20일에 스코틀랜드 교회에 의해 채택되었다. 대소요리문답은 영국 의회에서는 1648년 9월에 통과되었는데, 스코틀랜드 교회는 1648년 7월에 채택하였다. 웨스트민스터 신앙고백서는 미국에 건너와서 1788년과 1877년 1903년에 일부분씩 개정되었고, 1967년에 이르면 신조의 개정이 아니라 새로운 신앙고백서를 작성하였다. 해방 이전에 우리나라 장로교회의 신앙표준 문서는 12신조와 웨스트민스터 소요리문답이었으며, 평양장로교 신학교에서는 웨스트민스터 표준문서들이 교육의 표준이었다. 해방 후 1950년대에 분열한 장로교단들은 1960년대에 접어들어 자신들의 신앙적인 정체성을 확립하기 위하여 웨스트민스터 표준문서들을 각 교단의 신앙표준으로 채택하였다. 특히 1967년 이후에 각 교단이 웨스트민스터 신앙고백서를 채택하는 데는 1967년 미국연합장로교회가 신정통주의의 색채를 가진 새신앙고백서를 작성한 것이 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 보수적인 교단들인 고신, 대신, 합동, 합신 교단에서 웨스트민스터 신앙고백서를 비롯한 표준문서들은 현재도 살아있는 신앙의 기준인 반면, 통합교단에서는 과거 신앙고백의 유산으로 받아들이고 있고, 기장은 과거 유물로 사라졌다. 앞으로 장로교단들이 신학적인 공감대를 넓혀 나가기 위해서는 대부분의 교단들이 공유하고 있는 웨스트민스터 신앙고백서와 소요리문답을 활용할 수 있을 것이다. 1965년 통합교단에서 장로교연맹체 운동이 발의될 때 “장로회 신조와 대소요리문답을 그대로 믿는 장로회 명칭을 사용하는 교단의 대화”를 제안하였고 기장에서도 호응이 있어 1981년에 한국장로교협의회가 탄생하였고, 이것이 발전하여 1995년 현재의 한국장로교총연합회가 되었다. 그러므로 한국장로교는 웨스트민스터 신조와 소요리문답을 바탕으로 장로교단들의 협력과 일치를 끌어낼 수 있는 신학적인 토대를 넓혀나가야 하겠다.

Abstract

Because Korean Presbyterian Church is divided into so many denominations, the unity of presbyterian denominations is very necessary. Well, though the unity of denominations is difficult because of the clericalism, it is also difficult because of the doctrinal differences. Though the presbyterian denominations have the doctrinal differences, they share the Westminster Confession and the Westminster Larger Catechism and the Westminster Smaller Catechism as the basic standard of doctrine. Accordingly, the Korean Presbyterian Church can reduce the theological gap through the use of the Westminster Standards which it shares The Upper House approved the Westminster Confession on 16 February 1647 and the Scotland General Assembly adopted it on 27 August 1647. The Westminser Larger Catechism and the Smaller Catechism were passed Parliament in September 1648 and the Church of Scotland approved them in July 1648. The Westminster confession was revised at some parts in 1788, 1877, 1903 in America. The new confession was drawn up in 1967. Before the Emancipation, the Korean Presbyterian Standards were the Twelves Articles and the Westminster Smaller Catechism. The Westminster Standards were the educational standards at Pyungyang Theological Seminary. The presbyterian dominations which were divided in 1950's adopted the westminster confession as the theological standard of their own denomination in 1960's. Particularly, after 1967, each denomination adopted the westminster confession because the PCUSA drew up the new confession of 1967 which had the new orthodox colors. Even nowadays, the conservative denominations such as the Koshin, Daeshin, Hapdong, Hapshin have the Westminster standards as the living canon of faith. But Tonghap accepts the westminster confession as the past confessional heritage and it disappeared as a relic of the past in the Kijang. In the future, in order to broaden the theological sympathy in the presbyterian denominations, they can use the westminster confession and the westminster smaller catechism which all most denominations share. When Tonghap proposed the movement of Presbyterian Union in 1965, it proponed the dialogues of denominations using the presbyterian name which believed the presbyterian creed and the larger catechism and the smaller catechism. Kijang responded the proposal and Korean Presbyterian Council was established in 1981. It was developed into the Council of Presbyterian Churches in Korea in 1995. Therefore, Korean Presbyterian Church will broaden the theological foundation which can draw the cooperation and concord of the presbyterian denominations on the basis of the westminster confession and the smaller catechism.
