Abstract

Until the late 1970s, the Psalter was treated as a disjointed collection of assorted diverse compositions. However, since the 1980s there has been a major shift in emphasis in psalms studies. Namely, psalm scholars pay attention to the Psalter as a coherent literary whole. This holistic approach understands the Psalter as a book and searches for the message and function of a psalm in the relation of the neighboring psalms and in the context of the whole Psalter. Interestingly, Psalm 107 belonging to Book V has close relation with Psalms 105-106, the last psalms of Book IV. That is, the three psalms trace the history of Israel from the covenant of Abraham to the return from exile. In the progression of this history, Psalm 107 deals with the return from exile. In the context of the return from exile, Psalm 107 calls the post-exilic community to do three things: First of all, the psalm summons the people in the community to praise Yahweh for his steadfast love (דסח) and wonderful works(תואלפנ) by which they could return from exile. Then, the psalm leads them to reflect Yahweh's sovereignty, especially his limitless transforming power extending over the land and human life, and further, to meditate Israel's history in fluctuation between blessing and curse according to Yahweh's transformation. Finally, from the reflection on “unresolved tensions" between blessing and curse in their history, the psalmist challenges them to get wisdom by giving heed to and understanding Yahweh's דסח. That is, when properly responding Yahweh's דסח, they can overcome the tensions. As seen throughout the history, only the needy had enjoyed Yahweh' דסח. The wise understand that the needy are the only beneficiary of Yahweh's 󰕉󰘑󰖒. Thus, the psalmist challenges the post-exilic community to follow the way of life proper to Yahweh's דסח. Psalm 107 proceeds from the call to praise of Yahweh's דסח demonstrating in the past history to the call to understanding of Yahweh's דסח for the future. In Psalm 107 there is no mention to the way of life proper to Yahweh's דסח. However, the fact that Psalm 108, the next psalm of Psalm 107, is a Davidic psalm suggests that David is a model of the wise. Also, when considering the fact that Psalm 107 is an introduction to Book V, the reader anticipates that the psalms in the book demonstrate the life of the wise.
