Abstract

This paper examines the relationship between the state and the church through the ecclesiastical and historical theological studies of Dr. Ung-Kyu Pak. The relationship between the state and the church in church history research is a crucial factor that determines the direction of the study. It is essential to consider the advantages and disadvantages of understanding the church and state as separate entities or as inseparable entities. Dr. Pak argues, based on Mark 12:17, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's," that the separation of church and state signifies more than mere division of domains, emphasizing interaction under God's sovereignty. His research deeply explores the relationship between the Korean church and the state in historical and theological contexts, demonstrating how this relationship should be harmoniously understood and interact under God's sovereignty. Dr. Pak stresses that the separation of church and state is not merely isolation but the establishment of a mutually respectful and cooperative relationship centered on God's sovereignty. This provides a foundation for the church to play a transformative role in society and the state, contributing to the realization of God's righteousness. He demonstrates this through historical examples, such as the Korean church during the Japanese occupation, where the church rightly understood and practiced the relationship between the church and the state, transcending national suffering under God's sovereign history. In conclusion, Dr. Pak's research offers significant insights into how the Korean church should understand and construct the relationship between the church and the state, addressing contemporary challenges. Approaching the relationship between the church and the state from the perspective of 'differentiated but correlated separation' presents a methodology for the Korean church to function responsibly and effectively in social and political realms. This approach helps the church pursue social justice and transformation under God's sovereignty while faithfully fulfilling its mission. Dr. Pak's research adds depth and breadth to the theological and historical discussions on the relationship between the church and the state, providing a valuable foundation for future research and practice in this area.
