Abstract

This paper addresses the problem of evil (mal) from both existential and hermeneutical perspectives. Traditional theodicies have approached the question of evil primarily from a metaphysical standpoint, focusing on its origin and ontological status. In contrast, Søren Kierkegaard (1813–1855), regarded as a forerunner of 19th-century existentialism, explored evil through the lens of human existential experience and psychological depth. Paul Ricœur (1913–2005), a leading figure in 20th-century hermeneutics, expanded the understanding of evil within an interpretive framework. Although Ricœur, rooted in the Calvinist Reformed tradition, and Kierkegaard, a Lutheran, shared a common Protestant background, their theological approaches to evil reveal significant differences. For Ricœur, who devoted much of his work to the question of human subjectivity, existentialism—and particularly Kierkegaard’s thought—occupied a central place. Ricœur authored two key essays engaging with Kierkegaard, through which we can examine how Ricœur both interprets and critically transcends Kierkegaard’s position. This study first examines Kierkegaard’s view of evil as an existential sin arising from individual anxiety and despair, highlighting the inner decision of the “single individual” before God. It then analyzes Ricœur’s phenomenological hermeneutics of symbols and texts, which recontextualize the problem of evil in historical and linguistic dimensions. Building upon this, the paper investigates Ricœur’s critique of Kierkegaard’s treatment of evil, particularly his move beyond Kierkegaard’s individualistic framework. Ricœur refuses to reduce evil to purely existential anguish; instead, he understands it as a symbolic phenomenon embedded in collective and social structures. This enables an expansion of the discourse on evil toward the domains of ethical practice and communal responsibility. Ultimately, this study aims to reveal how discourse on evil has shifted from traditional theodicy to modern philosophical reflection through an in-depth comparative analysis of Kierkegaard and Ricœur. Furthermore, it seeks to contribute to contemporary thought by suggesting new directions for understanding and engaging with social evil in the 21st century.
