Abstract
Cornelius Van Til, as a founding professor of Westminater Theological Seminary, lectured on a wide range of subjects, not only on Apologetics, Metaphysics, and Systematic Theology, but also on Christian Ethics and the Ten Commandments. Nevertheless, while Van Til’s understanding of apologetics has received considerable scholarly attention due to his presuppositional method, his understanding of ethics has until recently drawn relatively little notice. This study aims to understand Van Til’s Christian Theistic Ethics by defining the central theme of his ethics as the opposition between the self-sufficiency of God and the self sufficiency of human. In Christian Theistic Ethics, Van Til explores the principles of Christian ethics in Part I and addresses the development of non-Christian ethics in Part II by focusing on the concept of the principle of human inwardness and self-sufficiency. Van Til unfolds all these discussions within the framework of the opposition between the self-sufficiency of God and the self-sufficiency of human. Accordingly, this study seek to reinterpret Van Til’s Christian Theistic Ethics through the lens of opposition of self-sufficiency, thereby not only expanding the understanding of Van Til’s ethics but also exploring an aspect of the Reformed ethics that Van Til sought to establish.
