본 연구의 목적은 19~20세기 네덜란드 신학자 아브라함 카이퍼(Abraham Kuyper, 1837~1920)의 『반혁명 국가학』(Antirevolutionaire Staatkunde, 1916~1917)을 중심으로 ‘국가’와 ‘교회’ 사이의 바른 관계성을 도출하기 위함이다. 교회와 국가의 관계성에 대한 논의는 결코 단순하지 않다. 오히려 매우 복잡한 사안이다. 사안이 복잡할수록 사안의 본질로 접근해 들어가야 훨씬 더 수월하게 잘 풀린다. 1878년 41세의 나이로 반혁명당 당수가 되었으며, 1901년 64세 때 네덜란드 수상이 된 탁월한 신학자임과 동시에 역량 있는 정치인이었던 카이퍼는 『반혁명 국가학』에서 국가와 교회의 바른 관계성을 설득력 있게 논증했다. 이런 카이퍼의 가르침을 경청하는 것은 복잡한 문제를 풀 때 매우 필요한 자세 및 태도다. 카이퍼의 국가와 교회와의 관계에 대한 연구는 대부분 『영역 주권론』(Souvereiniteit in Eigen Kring, 1880)이나 『정치 강령』(Ons Program, 1879)으로 이루어졌지 『반혁명 국가학』으로 이루진 적은 거의 없다. 본 연구는 이런 학문적 공백을 메꾸기 위한 의도도 응당 존재한다. 국가와 교회의 구별, 국가 교회, 중간적·절충적 입장, 미국의 모범적인 예, 돈 문제, 상호 자유에 입각한 국가와 교회의 바른 관계성 고찰 등의 순서를 밟아가며 국가와 교회 사이의 바른 관계성을 도출할 것이며, 마지막으로는 실천적 고찰 및 적용 지점을 파악하며 글을 현장성 있게 적용한 후 마무리하겠다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to derive the proper relationship between ‘state’ and ‘church’ centered on the Dutch theologian Abraham Kuyper’s(1837-1920) Antirevolutionaire Staatkunde from the 19th-20th centuries. The discussion of the relationship between church and state is by no means simple. Rather, it is a very complex matter. The more complex an issue is, the more easily it can be resolved by approaching its essence. Kuyper, who became the leader of the Anti-Revolutionary Party at the age of 41 in 1878 and became Prime Minister of the Netherlands at the age of 64 in 1901, was both an outstanding theologian and a capable politician who persuasively argued for the proper relationship between state and church in Antirevolutionaire Staatkunde. Listening to Kuyper’s teachings is a very necessary attitude and approach when solving complex problems. Most research on Kuyper’s view of the state and its relationship with the church has been conducted through Souvereiniteit in Eigen Kring(1880) or Ons Program(1879), but rarely through Antirevolutionaire Staatkunde. This study also exists with the intention of filling this academic gap. Following the order of distinguishing between state and church, National or State Church, intermediate and compromising positions, exemplary cases from America, financial matters, and examining the proper relationship between state and church based on mutual freedom, this study will derive the proper relationship between state and church. Finally, the study will conclude by identifying practical considerations and application points and applying the writing with practical relevance.
