아브라함 카이퍼의 영역 주권 사상이 주는 사회 윤리적 함의에 관한 고찰

본 논문은 네덜란드의 신학자이자 정치가며 언론인인 동시에 교육자였던 아브라함 카이퍼(1837-1920)가 영역 주권에 대한 자신의 사상을 어떻게 발전시키려고 노력했으며 그 사회 윤리적 함의가 무엇인지 고찰한다. 그는 하나님의 주권을 강조한 장 칼뱅의 신학을 우리 삶의 모든 영역으로 확장시켜 이른바 신칼빈주의를 주장했다. 이러한 영역 주권의 원칙에 따라 카이퍼는 우리 삶의 각 영역은 하나님이 정하신 고유한 주권을 가지고 있으므로 다른 영역을 존중해야 하며 자신의 힘과 권위로 간섭해서는 안 된다고 주장했다. 이 사상을 바탕으로 카이퍼는 1980년 암스테르담에 자유 대학교를 설립하고 “영역 주권(Souvereiniteit in eigen kring)”이라는 제목으로 개교 연설을 했다. 나아가 그의 사상은 네덜란드 사회의 소위 “기둥화(Verzuiling)”라는 결과를 낳았다. 이에 관해 설명한 후 이 사상의 사회윤리적 함의를 네덜란드 및 한국적 상황에서 논의하겠다. 결론적으로 카이퍼의 이러한 통찰력을 우리가 어떻게 발전적으로 적용할 수 있을지 생각해 볼 것이다.
Abstract
This article investigates how Abraham Kuyper(1837-1920), a Dutch theologian, politician, journalist and educator tried to develop his ideas of sphere sovereignty. He expanded Jean Calvin’s theology which emphasized the sovereignty of God into all the spheres of our lives. This is so-called Neo-Calvinism. With this principle of sphere sovereignty, Kuyper argued that each sphere has its own sovereignty established by God so each sphere should respect other spheres and should not intervene others with its own power and authority. Based on this idea, Kuyper founded Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam in 1980 and gave his opening address with the title “Souvereiniteit in eigen kring(Sphere sovereignty).” Furthermore, his idea resulted in the so-called pillarization of the Dutch society. Then the socioꠓethical implications of this thought both in the Netherlands and Korea are discussed. As a conclusion, we will reflect how Kuyper’s insight can be applied.
