Abstract
Rendering can be thought of as a process that determines the final color of a pixel observed from users. Basically we can say that a final color is result that a light source hits a material, then it reflects, refracts, absorbs and transmit. In this paper, we briefly overview of key issues for physically-based rendering (PBR) that receives highlights in areas of games, VR, and graphics. Future issues that need to find solutions is addressed as well. In order to comprehend PBR, we first need to introduce fundamental knowledge. A light can be thought of as an input of rendering. We introduce radiometry that deals with measuring a light. In addition, characteristic of surface is critical when rendering a material. In some materials, reflectance can takes place only in the surface which can be realized in surface reflectance model. Meanwhile, reflectance can occur in both surface and sub surface that is obviously associated with some sort of translucent materials. Lastly, we summarize recent progress from game societies as well as academic approaches and address some significant issues that need to be resolved.
