Abstract

TheYeollimuntechniquethathasbeenabsentfrom thehistoryofKoreanporcelain-makingfor700yearshavebegunto receivenew lightamongtheartiststoday.WhilecalledYeollimunin Korea,thetechniqueisreferred to as“Gyo-tae”porcelain in Chinaand“Neriage”,"Nerikomi"or “Uzra” technique in Japan with more specialized diction. This study efforts for the understanding ofthe Japanese Yeollmun through the worksofone Japanese artistbylooking intotherelationbetweentheworkandtheartist’sphilosophyinhopestofindacornerstonefor Korea’sporcelaintradition. The“Yeonrimun”techniqueofJapanhasfounditssecureplaceintheworksofMatsuiKosei,the living nationaltreasure ofJapan and hisphilosophy,and inthe figurative language ofthe artist.Considered now as the prime traditionaltechnique,this was my greatinterestas a sculptor,tryingtoKorea’sYeollimunusingthistechnique. Thus,this study took deep consideration into the 40 years ofchange and developmentof MatsuiKosei’sworksandthephilosophyembeddedwithin—from 1960to2003(yearofdeath). Unlike China’s “Gyotaemun”and Korea’s “Yeonrimun,”Japan’s yeon-sang technique had its truebeginningsinmodernhistory,duringtheMeijiIshinperiod.ItwasMatsuiKoseiwhoplaced the technique as Japan’s own tradition through his dynamic and active productions.To his effort,the Japanese term “Neriage” was born to be the universalterm used to referto porcelainingeneralaroundtheworld.Thisstudyhopestoprovideafreshturningpointforthe artistsofYeollimuninKorea.
