Abstract
Car-sharing has been recognized as a potential solution to decrease automobile dependencies and reduce car-ownership and vehicle travel. While there exist many countries - more than 65 countries around the world - that have car-sharing services in their domestic areas, no single service provider ever exists in Korea. Furthermore, no serious governmental-level consideration or research has ever been given to introducing such schemes in Korea. This research might be the first of such kind. This study focuses on feasibility of the business car-sharing scheme in Korea. Business car-sharing has been referred as a promising solution for commute trip reductions. In our research, it was identified that about 30% of commute trips using personal vehicles is contributed to business use of their personal vehicles during the working hours, which subsequently increases the parking demands at the workplace. We estimated the potential number of users as well as the potential benefits of business car-sharing if such a scheme is introduced. To estimate the number of possible users, a stated preference survey was designed and conducted. Based on the estimated number of users, the amount of potential benefits was calculated in terms of reduced vehicle travels, fuel cost and CO2 emissions savings. A simple market analysis was conducted to figure out whether it could be a viable business in Korea. As many researches pointed out that governmental support is critical for the success of car-sharing, possible supports that can be provided by the local and central governments were summarized. We provided recommendations of immediate actions to introduce such a scheme.
