Abstract
Infrastructures on highway should be installed to decrease the number of crashes and their severities. The installing locations of the infrastructures need to be selected on the basis of their relations with highway accidents. The design and installation should be considered as selection effects in the accident analysis. The effects appear to the selection for locations of the lighting installation on highway in this research. Against this background, I analyze the effects of lighting installations on crashes and the selection effects of locations. Data for 125 mile long, 7 interstates in Washington State is used in this research. The bivariate probit model and the negative binomial model are selected for the analysis of this research. The analysis results show that most of highway design and infrastructure variables have reasonable effects on interstate accidents with high level of significance. However, joint lighting probability variables have positive signs on accident variables. The results show that the lightings locations may be selected without consideration for the relations with accidents. This paper suggests the necessity of the estimations for the effect of the accident analysis in the infrastructure installation. Research outcome will lay the foundation for decision makers to select infrastructure location on highway.
