초록

This essay traces, primarily through personal correspondence, Byron’s shifting attitudes towards his literary works and the copyright money he would receive from the publisher, John Murray, for his poetic works. During his early literary career, Byron sought to maintain an appearance and pride as an aristocratic poet by giving several copyright payments to his cousin or showing some hesitance to accept the money instantly from his publisher. This essay divides Byron’s literary career into two periods with regards to his attitudes towards the copyright money: before and after Byron’s departure from England in April 1816. In the first half of the essay, I examine Byron’s ambiguous attitude about receiving the profits from his literary creations. The second half of the essay explores Byron’s changed attitude about receiving copyright money and his strong obsession to get higher offer from his publisher. Byron’s pressing debts and other financial considerations, such as the failure of the sale of Newstead Abbey and the unfulfilled financial support from his wife, eventually forced him not only to need payment for his poems but also to actively negotiate with his publisher for higher copyright prices. More importantly, this essay argues that Byron’s growing expectation of how much money he should receive as a poet of his reputation clearly marks him as a professional poet.
