Abstract

Air travel demand in Korea has been growing up by 5% every year for the last few decades and this trend is expected to continue in the near future as well. While demand growth is a critical contributor to airline profit, its impact on airline profitability is quite dependent on operational performances such as load factor, aircraft utilization, and unit cost. If demand growth leads to productivity increase, airline profitability will also improve. If not, it may not be followed by profit growth. This paper studies the relationships between demand increase and operational performance, and suggests a method to estimate the impact of demand growth on airline operational performance and profitability. We find that with more demand opportunity, airlines can maximize profit by increasing first load factor, then aircraft utilization, and finally capacity. Throughout this process of operational performance improvement, airlines can lower marginal cost. That is, with 1% increase in demand, marginal cost increases by less than 1%. The suggested method is applied to the case of Gimpo International Airport.
