Abstract

This study aimed to identify the true character of the Achasan Jangseong Wall, whose nature has long been unclear, through archaeological methodology and the latest research findings. To this end, a complex approach involving the review of literature and map data such as Yasui Seiichi's survey materials, GIS analysis, time-series aerial photo interpretation, precise field surveys, and excavation of the Children's Grand Park section was implemented. The research revealed that, contrary to previous understanding, the Achasan Jangseong Wall is an enclosed structure surrounding a much broader area including Baebongsan Mountain, not limited to the ridges of Achasan, Yongmasan, and Mangusan Mountains, and confirmed that its overall boundary corresponds to the extent of the Salgoji Ranch of the Joseon Dynasty. Furthermore, archaeological evidence obtained through excavation clearly demonstrated that the wall's construction and reconstruction date to the Joseon Dynasty (initial construction estimated in Early Joseon, stone reinforcement from Mid-Joseon onwards), while direct evidence from the Three Kingdoms period was not found. The phased earthwork construction and the final stone reinforcement method were also found to be consistent with records related to the construction of the Salgoji Mokjangseong (Ranch Wall) and similar to other Joseon Dynasty Mokjangseong examples. Based on these empirical results, this study has archaeologically reconfirmed that the Achasan Jangseong Wall was the Mokjangseong of the Salgoji Ranch during the Joseon Dynasty. This research is significant in providing archaeological evidence regarding the wall's character, offering new insights into the historical landscape of eastern Seoul. Additionally, it highlights t he u rgent need f or e stab lishing conservation a nd m anagement measures for the newly identified remaining sections.
