반즈케(番付)로 읽는 가나데혼주신구라 - 이미지 표현을 중심으로 -

Abstract

Banzuke, a guide for a stage appreciation and a sort of performance promotion program as a means of communication characterized by the literature as a stage appreciation, started to be published in theaters in accordance with Joruri and Kabuki performances. This one-page material has concise and diverse information useful for the audience, such as performance place, date, title of work, roles, actors, playwright, and synopsis. For this reason, from the audience’s perspective, this was used to arouse more interest in the performance and obtain necessary information. Thus, the audience was able to appreciate “Kanadehon Chushingura” in a different form as a reading matter or content. On the other hand, from the theater’s perspective, it was used as a promotion material and a variable influencing the effects of attracting more audience as well as a material to figure out the information on the place, date, and title of each performance. This way, Banzuke formed a new relationship in the Edo literature as a main agent creating a culture derived during the process of accepting Kabuki.
