Abstract

This study looked at research trends by surveying and analyzing research papers on "summary sentences" in the field of Japanese language education from the 1990s to the 2020s. As a result, from the 1990s to the 2010s, there were two trends: research using "summaries" as a means of measuring learners' reading comprehension ability, and research looking at learners' ability to grasp the structure of source texts from the characteristics of summary sentences written by Japanese language learners. In recent years, there have also been studies for indirect quotations when undergraduate international students write reports. There were also studies that looked at the problem of excerpts from the original text. For undergraduate students, "summarizing" is not limited to "reading comprehension. Summaries are used in a variety of ways to record information understood and to communicate with others.
