Abstract
Ref Tolstoy's Anna Karenina and Takeo Arishima's One Woman were compared and analyzed, focusing on two female figures, Anna and Yoko. This study attempted to employ a third-party perspective that illuminates the two works with the same external standards: Lukács’s concept of "romanticism of disillusionment" and "reflective romanticism." As Lukács argues, Anna has reached reflective romanticism. However, I pointed out that Lukács's connotations of reflective romanticism are not sufficiently explained by Anna’s essential experience—the moment she predicted death from puerperal fever. I argued that the completion of a reflective romantic experience for Anna should include the moment of awareness that came to her before she died by suicide. In the "sharp light," she becomes disillusioned with the love she experienced: love that depends on Eros’s dynamics, love of choice. And she finds that the other reality of love, which is filled with the essence of true love, is love without selfishness. Yoko, on the other hand, is consistently obsessed with Eros’s dynamics in her love with Kurachi. From beginning to end, Yoko stands in the position of the weak, which drives her into a swamp of doubt, wears out her life, and leads to the breakdown of their relationship. However, she is disillusioned with the love she has pursued—trying to fascinate Kurachi by relying on sexuality—but she accepts her sense of weakness, suspicion, jealousy, and doubt as a fateful tragedy. On the night before the operation, Yoko feels that her life is wrong, as if it has been purified by moonlight. However, when she needs reflection, Yoko suddenly leaps to the theory of responsibility and falls into aporia. She does not try to reflect on the cause of the breakdown of the relationship. The meaning of life and human relationships is buried in darkness and fails to reach reflective romanticism.
