Abstract

This article examines Chinese stele inscriptions carved at Bodhgaya one of the major pilgrimage sites in Indian Buddhism. Six inscriptions in all―five of those inscriptions at Mahābodhi Temple and the other one in the neighborhood―were discovered at the end of the 19th century. Among the Chinese inscriptions below, five of them were inscribed from the end of the 10th century to the beginning of the 11th century. Therefore, they are important historical documents for studying Buddhist cultural exchanges between India and China during this period. Since their discovery, several European scholars attempted to decipher and translate them into European languages with deep concern. On the contrary, only a few eastern scholars have studied with these inscriptions. Therefore I wish to draw attention with this study to these inscriptions in the East Asian academic circles. First, I reviewed previous studies in English, French, and German. Then, I renamd the inscriptions after their founders, Zhiyi (980s), Keyun (1022), Iching and Ilin (1022), Shaopin (1022), and Huaiwen (1033). In the next step, I presented new readings and translations along with reproductions or rubbings and my own assessments concerning several points of dispute. The former four inscriptions are now at the Indian museum in Kolkata (Calcutta). Buddhist historical accounts indicate that additional inscribed steles were founded at Mahābodhi temple, Kukkutapāda, and Rājagriha from the 7th to the 11th century, all of which were discussed briefly in this article. In light of the results achieved in my article, further in-depth studies of these Chinese inscriptions should be pursued and perhaps the discovery of other inscriptions including those carved by Korean monks may be anticipated.
