The purpose of this study is to explore visual communications and image expression of television documentary in theory and practice. This study analyzes documentary of researcher’s own making, so it is an invaluable study both in theory and practice. The analysis of image expression in this study is based on Herbert Zettl’s applied media aesthetics. Zettl describes the major aesthetic image elements—light and color, space, time/motion, and sound—and how they are used in television image and how to apply the major aesthetic elements to manipulate people’s perceptions. In this study Zettl’s theory is applied to the analysis of image in documentary, and thereby this thesis tries to study image expression focusing on visual perception of television viewer and communication function.
