Abstract
Rāmāyaṇa has been transmitted and recorded in various languages with great variations according to the regional and religious traditions. Coexistence of the different versions of Rama story demonstrates the influence of distinct traditions and values of different groups of people in the process of reproduction. This study examines the perception of a Tamil social reformer on the social conflicts with region, caste, and language intertwined together, through his critical reading of Rāmāyaṇa. Periyar, a Tamil non-Brahmin activist and ideologue, viewed the traditional Rāmāyaṇa as the structure of bi-polarity of north versus south India, Brahmin versus non-Brahmin, and good versus evil, therefore evaluated it as an instrument to spread the supremacy of north India and Brahmin. He endeavored to recover the power and respect of south India(n), Tamil, and non-Brahmin against north India(n), Arya, and Brahmin. Periyar’s criticism on Rāmāyaṇa can be clearly understood in the socio-political context of Dravidian movement and Hindi-Tamil conflict for official language since the colonial period. Anti-Rāmāyaṇa activities as symbol of resistance against Hindi and north Indian culture in the situation of Hindi-Tamil conflict showed that the bi-polarity of Rāmāyaṇa was a reflect of the actual political circumstances. Periyar intended to overthrow the power relation through the overthrow of narratives in Rāmāyaṇa. His criticism should be read in the ideological context of Self-Respect and Dravidian movements pursuing to counterpose south India, non-Brahmin, and Tamil to north India, Brahmin, and Hindi.
