한국 근대 사진교육사 연구 : 1910~1945

Abstract

Photographic education is a key component of the photographic institutions, along with photographic competitions, photography organizations, photographic exhibition spaces, and photographic theory and criticism. Above all, it enables the systematic training and production of prospective photographers. Initially, photography education was practiced as a form of vocational education. In particular, as the photographic industry grew in the 1920s, it was organized as a course to meet the rapidly increasing demand for portraits. This was an important mechanism that determines the existence of professional photographers in the early years of Korean photography history. Until now, previous research on the history of photographic education during the Japanese colonial period has mainly centered on the Department of Photography at Hwangseong Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA Photography Department) and its successor, the Gyeongseong Institute of Photography, and focused on the activities of Shin Nak-gyun, who served as a professor and director. However, this study shows that a　calligraphy and painting training academy called ‘Gyoyuk Seohwagwan’ already included a photographic education course in 1907, before 'YMCA Photography Department', and that photography department was installed as a special course (although not a formal course) in various schools such as Gongseong School, Han Young Seowon, Daeyeongjeongsuk, and Yaksong Normal School. It also identified women's photography education institutions that have been excluded so far ('Photography Department of Geunhwa Women's School', 'Photography Department of Myeongseong Women's Unemployment Institute', and 'YMCA Photography Women's Department'). Although the existence of women photographers who received photographic education at these institutions has not yet been confirmed, the significance of this article is that it laid the foundation for research on the history of women's photographic education before liberation. In addition, for a balanced understanding of the photographic education institution during this period, the major education institutions of photography in Japan and the Koreans who studied there were also covered. This study will contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the history of photography education before the liberation in 1945.
