이 논문은 1960년대 행위예술가들이 사진을 예술적 표현을 확장하는 도구로 활용한 방식을 연구한다. 급격한 사회·문화적 변화 속에서 예술가들은 사진을 새로운 예술 매체로 수용했으며, 사진의 즉시성과 대중적 호소력을 통해 사회적 메시지를 효과적으로 전달하고자 했다. 이 시기에 행위 예술과 개념미술이 미술계 주류로 떠오르면서, 예술가들은 일회성 퍼포먼스를 기록하고자 사진을 적극적으로 사용했다. 특히 신체의 움직임을 매개로 하는 행위 예술에서는 사진이 단순한 기록을 넘어 예술과 사회 메시지를 결합하는 중요한 수단으로 자리 잡았다. 이 논문은 주요 행위예술가들의 사진 기록을 분석하여, 그들이 작업에 담고자 했던 메시지와 사진 매체를 통한 표현 방식을 조명함으로써 사진이 예술적 매체로 자리 잡게 된 과정을 보여 주고자 한다. 이를 통해 사진 매체가 다른 예술 분야 특성들을 파악하고, 그것과 결합하여 더 넓고 다양한 방법으로 표현하여 사진 예술 분야의 확장 가능성을 모색하였다.
Abstract
This paper examines how performance artists in the 1960s used photography as a tool to expand their artistic expression. In the midst of rapid social and cultural changes, artists embraced photography as a new artistic medium, and sought to effectively convey social messages through the immediacy and popular appeal of photography. During this period, as performance art and conceptual art emerged as mainstream art forms, artists actively used photography to record one-off performances. In particular, in performance art using body movements as a medium, photography became an important means of combining art and social messages beyond mere records. This paper analyzes the photographic records of major performance artists, and illuminates the messages they intended to convey in their work and the methods of expression through the photographic medium, thereby showing the process by which photography became established as an artistic medium. Through this, it explores the characteristics of the photographic medium in other artistic fields and explores the possibility of expanding the field of photographic art by combining it with broader and more diverse methods of expression.
