본 연구는 개념미술이 사회적 변혁과 과학기술의 진보 속에서 예술의 물질성에서 관념성(탈물질성)으로 전환된 과정을 고찰한다. 특히 개념미술이 지닌 사회 비판적 태도와 기술 매체를 적극적으로 활용한 ‘탈물질화’ 전략에 주목하여, 디지털 및 인공지능 시대의 사진 매체와 결합된 예술 실천의 변화 양상을 구체적 사례를 통해 분석한다. 이를 위해 문헌 연구, 사례 분석, 미술사적 맥락 정리 등을 아우르는 통합적 방법론을 적용하며, 1960년대 이후 개념미술 전개 과정에서 사진이 수행한 매체적 기능을 역사적으로 조명한다. 주요 이론적 관점으로는 토머스 쿤(Thomas Kuhn)의 ‘예술의 발아–위기–패러다임 전환’ 개념과 더불어 사회학적 논의를 참조하여, 개념미술의 사상적 전환 배경과 예술가들의 전략적 실천을 구조적으로 해석한다. 나아가 디지털 환경과 AI 기반 이미지의 확산 속에서 사진이 어떻게 개념미술의 연장선상에서 새로운 예술 매체로 확장되는지를 분석한다. 본 연구는 사회, 기술, 예술 간의 패러다임 전환이 상호 교차하며 구축되는 과정을 학제적 관점에서 조망하고, 사진사 및 현대미술 연구의 이론적 지평을 확장하는 데 의의를 둔다.
Abstract
This study investigates the transformation of conceptual art from materiality to immateriality (conceptuality) in response to social change and technological advancement. It particularly focuses on the socially critical orientation of conceptual art and its strategic use of technological media in developing “dematerialization” practices. Through selected case studies, the research analyzes how photographic media has been integrated into artistic practices in the digital and AI era. Adopting an interdisciplinary methodology—including literature review, case analysis, and art historical contextualization—this study traces the evolving role of photography within conceptual art since the 1960s. Special attention is given to how photography functioned not merely as a visual art form but as a conceptual and documentary tool that engages with ephemeral actions and ideas. The study applies Thomas Kuhn’s paradigm shift model—artistic germination, crisis, and transformation—alongside sociological perspectives to interpret the ideological transformation and strategic practices of artists in this context. Furthermore, it explores how photography, amid the rapid expansion of digital and AI-based image technologies, continues to evolve as an extended artistic medium aligned with conceptual art. Ultimately, this research aims to highlight the interrelationship between social, technological, and artistic paradigm shifts and contributes to expanding theoretical discourse in both the history of photography and contemporary art.
