한국의 개화기 미술교육 고찰

Abstract

Since art education was introduced in institutional schools, art education in Korea has undergone various changes and development and has reached a stage of self-creation. In order to obtain a relatively easy study of these changes and developments, one should divide the periods into three different periods; the period when the new education system was established after the Gapogyongjang(1895), the period during Japanese Colonial Times, and the period after independence from Japan. A lot of studies of the new education system of Korea during these periods, either comprehensive or by each period, are in progress in various academic fields and they have been producing surprising achievements. Art education today has shown a great deal of change and development, but there are still a lot of problems, which have become obstacles for implementation of education. This is partly because art education lacks historical studies compared to other fields. The repeated trial and error in art education today is attributable to the fact that it has not yet established a fundamental structure, which forms the foundation of development. As it has been referred to by many scholars, the principal purpose of studying art education is to systematize art education of the past according to the order of time, predict the future, and set new ground for art education for the years to come. This study, therefore, will try to review comprehensively the history of Korean art education and thus understand the reasons for problems in art education and propose solutions to the problems. Although a study on how art education has changed and developed in various circumstances should proceed in order to achieve this goal, first we will deal with art education in one of the three periods mentioned above, namely, art education in the Enlightenment period of Korea.
