Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to show individual lexical exceptions and variability based on the interlanguage stress constraint hierarchy of Korean learners within the Optimality Theory (OT, Prince & Smolensky, 1993). OT explains that learning language is the understanding of the target language constraint hierarchy, and it also explains that a language variation is accounted by different rankings of the same universal constraints. The learner's developmental processes can be continued until their constraint sets reach the target language's constraint hierarchy. In order to seek a general interlanguage constraint ranking for imposing English stress in Korean EFL (English as a Foreign Language), there was a survey examining 111 Korean learners who were divided into three groups, that is, different age and educational background groups. Using 46 English words in the different grammatical categories, Korean learners show the regularity of imposing English stress; otherwise, particular lexical items do not follow the regularity. The variability and exceptional lexical items of investigated words might be resolved in a way of constraint re-ranking. OT treats that constraint re-ranking is natural, because language learning is a result of not only the "item-by-item fashion" but also "across-the-board fashion."
