초록
The purpose of this paper is to examine the context-sensitive variation of the quality of the schwa /ə/, which was produced by five Americans and five Canadians. The first and the second formants of word-inital, word-medial, and word-final schwa vowels are measured to investigate the patterns of their variation. The three allophones of the schwa, caused by the different phonetic environments, are compared with other adjacent vowels such as /ʌ/, /a/, and /ɑ/ to see if there is any phonetic similarity among them. The result of the formant measurement will also show what kinds of the differences are found between American speakers and Canadian speakers. Further, the three allophones of the schwa are compared with Korean vowels to find out phonetic similarity among those vowels. Finally, based on the comparison of English schwa vowels with Korean ones, it is suggested that Korean speakers make use of their own vowels as an effective way of pronouncing context-sensitive English schwa.
