초록
English present perfect is well known to be grammatically marked by “have+p.p.(past participle),” whereas Korean linguists still do not agree on whether Korean has an aspect system in addition to a tense system. The suffix “-ess” in Korean is proposed as a tense marker, as an aspect marker, or as both a tense and an aspect marker. In this context, the main purpose of this paper is to reinvestigate the semantics of Korean sentences with “-ess” and to determine whether “-ess” functions as a present perfect aspect marker. It will be proposed that the meaning of Korean present perfect is not derived from “-ess,” but from the verb in the sentence with “-ess” which has a “result state” semantic component.
