The Journal of Studies in Language 31.4, 887-909. This paper takes up the kulehkey ha- construction in Korean, especially focusing on the extraction possibility out of this pro-form. This paper first examines the properties of this construction, comparing it with the English do so construction. The former is different from the latter in that it seemingly allows extraction out of it in diverse environments. However, it will be shown that the seeming extraction is just apparent and there is no movement at all out of the replacement site. Instead, it will be shown that the remnant phrase is not extracted out of the replacement site, but is base generated in its surface position. This proposal allows us to account for why some dependency relation is prohibited in the extraction context while others seem to be allowed. Also discussed are the implications this phenomenon has on the distinction between deep and surface anaphor.
