This study investigates the existence of subject-to-subject raising in Korean by using the clausemate condition of negative polarity items as a diagnostic tool. One hundred and seventy two native Korean speakers were asked to judge the acceptability of various sentences, including the ‘-kes kattha’ construction that has been purported to involve the raising operation. The results show that participants were likely to accept sentences that contained a negative polarity item as the subject of the embedded clause, while the negator was placed in the matrix clause. This indicates that the embedded subject has raised to the matrix subject in order to be licensed by the negator in the same clause, suggesting that there is indeed subject-to-subject raising in Korean.
