Abstract

This study aimed to compare the effects of upper limb and lower limb task-oriented circuit trainings on functional ability, balance, and daily activities in patients with acute stroke. Twenty subjects were randomly allocated to either the upper extremity task-oriented circuit training group or the lower extremity task-oriented circuit training group, with 10 subjects in each group. The outcomes were assessed by the Fugl-Meyer assessment (FMA), the timed up and go (TUG) test, the Berg balance scale (BBS), and the modified Barthel index (MBI). Comparison of the results for both groups demonstrated that the lower extremity task-oriented circuit training group showed significantly greater improvement rates in the lower extremity and balance sub-items of the FMA, the TUG test, and the MBI. In addition, there were significant time-by-group interactions in the same parameters (p<.05). These findings suggest that lower limb task- oriented circuit training may be more beneficial than upper extremity task- oriented circuit training for improving the physical functions of patients with acute stroke. Further studies need to generalize these findings.
