Abstract
The purpose of this study was to establish reliability and validity of the Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS) translated into Korean for people with lower extremity musculoskeletal dysfunction. Forty-four subjects (21 males, 23 female) with lower-extremity musculoskeletal dysfunction enrolled in the study. They completed a standardized, self-administered questionnaire that included usual work, hobbies, getting into or out of the bath, walking, putting on your shoes, squatting, lifting on object, light or heavy activities around home, getting into or out of a car, going up or down stair, standing or sitting for 1 hour, running, sharp turns while running fast, hopping, rolling over in bed. Reliability was determined by intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Cronbach’s alpha by internal consistency. Validity was examined by correlating the LEFS scores to the SF-36 scores. Test-retest reliability of the translated versions of the LEFS was excellent ICC(2,1)=.98(95%CI=.85~.95). Cronbach’s alpha value for LFES was found to be .96 and this was statistically significant (p<.01). The correlations between the LEFS and the SF-36 physical function subscale and physical component score were .65, and .63(p<.01), respectively. There was a higher correlation between the LEFS and mental component score were .75(p<.01). We concluded that the Korean version LEFS was shown to be a reliable and valid instrument for the assessment of lower-extremity musculoskeletal dysfunction.
