Abstract

This article is to reevaluate the criteria of autism as making eye contact in qualitative impairment in social interaction. When disability is considered from cultural construction, the lack of making eye contact which is an indicator of impairment in social interaction in the United States should be reevaluated from the cultural perspective. Different cultures have different meanings for nonverbal behaviors. Through literature review, eye contact has a lot of meaning in the United States whereas it does have little meaning in South Korea. The lack of eye contact is considered as deviant in social interaction in Western society, however, that is also considered as being deviant in South Korea as one of items of criteria of diagnosing autism. In terms of constructivism perspective, disability is social and cultural construction. Also, research indicates that the lack of eye contact is related with sensory processing. We have to reevaluate the criteria for diagnosing autism stem from the social criteria of the United States.
