Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the knee position sense with actively repositioning and visually active repositioning before and after a general fatigue load(5 minutes of running at 10Km/h a treadmill with a 10% uphill grade) on knee proprioception. The task was consisted of matching the position adopted actively and visually(visual display on a screen) by extending the knee from the starting position of 90°knee flexion to a preselected 45°flexion angle on the dominant leg. The accuracy of knee position sense was evaluated by measuring absolute angular error, which was determined as the mean value of the absolute angular error measuring from actively positioned knee angle to actively reproduced knee angle(actively repositioning), and from visually positioned knee angle to visually reproduced knee angle(visually active repositioning) in 3 consecutive trials before and after a general fatigue load in 26 healthy subjects. The results of the present studies evaluating the effect of muscle fatigue on knee proprioception may have been affected by the difference of fatigued conditions(local or general load). That is, results showed how knee position sense depends on the dysfunctional state of the muscle mechanoreceptors(local fatigued condition of the knee caused dysfunction of muscle mechanoreceptor mechanisms : loss of peripheral afferent signals) and how knee position sense depends on the proprioceptional pathway(general fatigued condition of the knee caused dysfunction of proprioceptional pathway mechanisms : deficiency of central processing of proprioceptional signals). A severe amount of general exertion fatigue may occur due to a failure in the integration of the limbic input and the motor functions within the basal ganglia affecting the striatal-thalamic-frontal cortical system.
