Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of falls experience on scores of unified Parkinson’s disease rating scale-motor examination (UPDRS-UM) in individuals with Parkinson’s disease for predicting fall risks. A total of 31 idiopathic Parkinson’s disease patients (15 of falls group, 16 of non-falls group) were recruited from four public local centers in this study. The UPDRS-UM and Berg balance test (BBT) were assessed in this study. The scores of UPDRS-UM increased significantly in the falls group compared to that non-falls group. The UPDRS-UM showed a good negative correlation with the BBT. The results of this study suggest that the UPDRS-UM is one of good predictors of falls risk in individuals with Parkinson’s disease, and the UPDRS-UM will use for predictor of fall risk for Parkinson’s disease.
