Abstract
The objective of this study was to compare the muscle activity patterns of the vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, semitendinosus, tibialis anterior, and gastrocnemius muscles under three conditions: overground walking, treadmill walking, and elliptical training. Thirteen healthy adults (nine males and four females) participated and surface electromyographic data were recorded. Thirteen persons were selected randomly at A university in Gyeonggi-do. The mean plus three standard deviations from a static trial was used as the threshold for muscle activity. Repeated measures analysis of variance procedures were used to detect the difference between the conditions and muscles. Elliptical training demonstrated greater muscle activity in vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and tibialis anterior muscle than it did in all other conditions. Treadmill walking demonstrated greater gastrocnemius activation than it did in elliptical training. No difference was found in semitendinosus activity in the three conditions. Elliptical training demonstrated greater vastus lateralis and vastus medialis activation than of all other muscles. Treadmill walking and overground walking demonstrated greater gastrocnemius activation than of all other muscles. These results provide normative values for vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, semitendinosus, tibialis anterior, and gastrocnemius muscles’ activation for different locomotor training methods and may assist in selecting the most appropriate training device for specific patients.
