Abstract
This study was to compare suprahyoid, infrahyoid, masseter muscle activity between the effortful swallow with emphasis on tongue to palate and with effortful swallow inhibiting emphasis on tongue to palate. Twenty healthy young participants recruited present's study(male 10, female 10, mean age 26.10±4.14). All participants was performed the effortful swallow with emphasis on tongue to palate and with inhibiting emphasis on tongue to palate. All participants are swallowed three times a total of six times swallowing saliva for each method. Order of each swallowing counterbalanced. Activitions of suprahyoid, infrahyoid, masseter muscle was analyzed utilizing surface electromyography(sEMG). Collected data was analyzed to Paired t-test. Effortful swallow with emphasis on tongue to palate was significantly greater activity in suprahyoid, infrahyoid, masseter muscle than effortful swallow with inhibiting tongue to palate(p<0.01). This study from findings suggest that effortful swallow with emphasis on tongue to palate may be a effective method to improve the muscles related to swallowing.
