Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the independent living experiences and perceived meanings of individuals with developmental disabilities who had achieved independence through community-based support services, as well as identify their needs and aspirations to propose concrete support strategies. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with five individuals with developmental disabilities who had participated for over two years in a community-based independence support program operated by a welfare center in City P and were currently living independently. Interviews were also conducted with one program manager and two independence coaches who provided direct one-on-one support in residential and daily living contexts. The collected data were analyzed using a case study method - including both within and cross-case analyses. As a result, two overarching themes were derieved - comprising five major categories, 10 subcategories, and 24 meaning units. The first theme, which represents the lived experiences and meanings of independence, was titled “Living the Reality of Independence While Dreaming of True Autonomy.” The second theme, reflecting the desires and support needs related to independent living, was titled “A Dream for Better Independence and a Path to Build Together.” Three of the five major categories identified include “Independence at the Boundary of Necessity and Choice,” “Small Hopes Encountered Along the Path to Autonomy,” and “Emerging Changes and Conflicts in the Reality of Independence”; furthermore, support needs were articulated through the final two categories: “Completing Independence and Blossoming into a New Life” and “A Shared Journey Toward Happy Independence.” These findings suggest ways to strengthen community-based support systems and offer foundational insights for promoting meaningful, individualized, and collaborative approaches to independence for individuals with developmental disabilities.
