Abstract
This study examines the “god” and the “people” in Kim Su-young’s poetry through the lens of Minjung theology, focusing on the concept of “ochlos” in the Gospel of Mark. Kim Su-young rejects a dogmatic, absolute god, instead he presents a dynamic divinity intertwined with human suffering, which often is depicted as “darkness” or a “co-sufferer,” and this resonates with Minjung theology’s portrayal of Jesus and the marginalized. In this theological perspective, “ochlos” signifies the oppressed, those excluded from societal structures. Similarly, Kim’s poetry portrays people as those enduring exclusion and suffering, yet embodying transformative potential. Poems like “Snow”, “Wisdom”, and “The Great Root” highlight these people’s vitality and power for change. This study argues that Kim Su-young’s concepts of “god” and “people” surpass those of resistance literature, addressing universal themes of suffering, transcendence, and collective transformation, and that they offer profound insights into contemporary humanistic and social discourses.
