The purpose of this thesis is to analyse editions of the petition of independence put forward by Kim Yoon-Sik and Lee Yong-Jik and to interpret them in a new way. The former researchers suggest that there are two different editions, the original and the dispatched, and that these versions have no difference and had been written by Kim Yoon-Sik by himself. However, these editions have a variety of versions more than other researchers argue, and particularly the dispatched edition had not been written by Kim Yoon-Sik by himself. Actually the dispatched edition resulted from retranslating the english version which missionary Genso translated for sending it overseas when The March First Movement broke out in 1919. Therefore, it is necessary that the dispatched edition have a subtle and marked discrepancy compared with the original edition. The petition put forward by Kim Yoon-Sik and Lee Yong-Jik was derived from sympathy and compassion on the people. They believed that they should follow people's demand for independence from Japanese rule because the March First Movement represented the will of Heaven. Also, they asked Japan to recognize the independence of Korea in advance, for they predicted the independence was very imminent. The argument was based on the context of Civilizationism of East Asia, which was never subordinate to Japan.
